A lens with a focal length smaller than 35mm is considered a wide angle lens. It produces a smaller picture, so the entire field of view can be shown. Typically, wide angle lenses are used to photograph architecture and landscapes. But, really, you can use it whenever you like. I only own one wide angle lens. And it's a fish-eye lens . It's a not a really good one, so I'll post other photographers' pictures as examples. Click the pictures to view their galleries.
Then you have your normal lens. A normal lens is a lens with a focal length of 35mm-70mm. It gives you a normal and natural look. It'll photograph things as they really are. No distortion of any kind.
Finally, you have your telephoto lens. A lens with a focal length of anything more than 70mm is considered a telephoto lens. This type of lens is usually used for portraiture, sports, and wildlife.
